Every business—whether it’s a small shop, a startup, or a multinational company—earns money, spends money, buys assets, and pays expenses every single day.
But have you ever wondered…

  • How much profit has the business earned?
  • How much cash is available?
How much money do customers still owe?
  • What is the actual value of the business?

Without proper accounting, answering these questions would be almost impossible.

That’s exactly why Accounting exists.

Accounting is often called the language of business because it records, organizes, summarizes, and communicates financial information that helps owners, managers, investors, banks, and government authorities make informed decisions.

Whether a business wants to prepare financial statements, file income tax returns, obtain bank finance, or evaluate its performance, everything begins with proper accounting.

What is Accounting?

Accounting may be defined as:

“Accounting is the art of recording, classifying, and summarising in a significant manner and in terms of money, transactions and events which are, in part at least, of a financial character, and interpreting the result thereof.”

At first glance, the definition may seem lengthy, but it simply explains that accounting is much more than maintaining records. It is a systematic process of converting business transactions into meaningful financial information that supports better decision-making.
